Chapter 13 August: Never Saw That Coming
“Wait hold up ma!” I said reaching out to grab Draya by her arm. Shorty was really bugging and the evil look in her eyes had a nigga kind of disturbed. I had come to the crib I used to share with Ming to get some of my shit out and I ended up walking into a massacre.
“Let go of me or you’ll be next August,” Draya threatened and I ain’t gone lie she made me out of a believer. “I really can’t even believe you. The fact that I still love you kills me. That bitch I just killed is the same bitch who shot me and come to find out it was because of you. YOU AUGUST! I could have lost my son.”
When Draya said she could’ve lost her son, I let go of her. I didn’t know how to take that information so I simply asked, “Is it mine?”
Draya’s eyes turned to slits and she shook her head before she ever replied. “How could you fix your mouth to even ask me that? I can’t do this right now,” she said as she walked away leaving me standing there in shock.
“Ain’t no way I got a son with Draya. She been gone almost a year,” I said out loud but to myself.
I did the math in my head real quick and I’ll be damned. I bolted out of the door in an attempt to catch up with Draya. I had to try to figure this out with her because if I had a son, I was going to be in his life. I saw her getting ready to jump into her truck so I ran that way.
“Can we talk ma?” I asked grabbing her hand firmly just as she was about to pull the door shut.
“Talk about what? The fact that you ain’t shit for being engaged to one of my friends. I mean B and YaYa August? Really? Or maybe we can talk about how you refuse to listen to anything I have to say? Or that you had the nerve to question me about your got damn son that I’ve been raising on my own?” Draya yelled and I could see the hurt in her eyes. “I don’t know what I ever saw in you August. But you know what, it’s not your fault that you’re so fucked up. I get it. I read your CPS cases and your juvenile record,” she said staring deep into my eyes. For the first time in my life, I felt like less than a man. Knowing that she knew me, the real August made me think back to a time that I had left buried deep in my past.
Christmas Eve 1988
It was Christmas Eve and there wasn’t a single present under the tree for me, but that was no surprise. I was six years old and I had never had a real Christmas that I could remember. However, Jasmine, this girl that lived next door to me said she bought me a gift and made me promise to come get it on Christmas.
